A compact set of versified rules for arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and planetary motion, including treating the earth as rotating on its axis while the heavens appear to move, is sufficient to compute planetary positions, eclipses, and time accurately.

A compact Sanskrit astronomical and mathematical treatise composed in verse by Aryabhata at age 23, by his own statement, dated to a Kali Yuga year corresponding to 499 AD. It covers a place-value number system, an accurate approximation of pi, trigonometric sine tables, algebraic methods, and a full planetary model including the proposal that the earth rotates on its axis, which the influential later commentator Brahmagupta rejected. Aryabhata's own stated location, 'Kusumapura,' is traditionally identified with the Gupta capital Pataliputra, though the identification is not universally accepted.
