A continuous, night-by-night record of planetary positions, lunar phases, eclipses, and weather kept by Babylonian temple astronomers, later editions folding in grain prices and river levels alongside celestial data, sustained across an extraordinary six centuries into the Hellenistic and Parthian periods. Modern reconstruction of the series, based on the editio princeps by Abraham Sachs and Hermann Hunger, has become indispensable for dating events across the ancient Near East by cross-referencing recorded eclipses against modern astronomical calculation, and the diaries' long habit of pure observational recordkeeping, prediction without causal theory, is now understood as the empirical foundation on which later mathematical astronomy, in Babylon and eventually in Greece, was built.
