A stone mountain of galleries carries about twelve hundred narrative relief panels that a pilgrim reads by walking, turning a Buddhist textual programme into a route.

The monument rises through square terraces to circular ones and a summit stupa. Its lower galleries carry reliefs illustrating the law of cause and effect, then the life of the Buddha, then the pilgrimage of Sudhana from the Gandavyuha, so that the walker ascends through a sequence of texts rendered as images. The lowest series was deliberately covered during construction. No inscription explains the programme, and its precise doctrinal intent is reconstructed from the panels themselves.
