Divyavadana gathers 38 Sanskrit narrative tales of karma spanning lifetimes, transmitted by the Mulasarvastivada Buddhist school and including the influential Ashokavadana, a legendary account of Ashoka's conversion that shaped later Buddhist memory of him as much as his own surviving edicts. Mathura reflects the Mulasarvastivada tradition's association; the exact place of compilation is uncertain.
