Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus
Injury can be diagnosed and treated through observation and reasoned prognosis alone, without invoking magic, making trauma medicine a rational discipline distinct from the rest of Egyptian healing.

Purchased in Luxor by the American dealer Edwin Smith in 1862 and eventually translated by James Henry Breasted in 1930, this papyrus preserves 48 case studies of injuries, arranged head to foot in the order a physician would examine a patient, from skull fractures through spinal trauma to wounds of the chest.
Each case follows a rigid three-part structure: a title naming the injury, an examination describing the patient's observable signs, and a diagnosis and prognosis stated in one of three set formulas, an ailment I will treat, an ailment I will contend with, or, for the most severe cases, an ailment not to be treated, an unflinching admission that some injuries lay beyond the physician's power. Where treatment is possible, the text prescribes bandaging, splinting, cauterization, and closure of wounds with sutures, without the incantations and amulets that dominate other Egyptian medical papyri.
This near-total absence of magical formulae, restored only in a handful of later cases probably added by a different hand, has made the Edwin Smith papyrus the single most cited evidence that ancient Egyptian medicine could operate as an empirical, observational discipline for trauma even while religious healing continued to dominate treatment of internal illness elsewhere in the corpus.
The text breaks off mid-sentence partway through a case on the spine, suggesting the surviving copy is itself incomplete, one roll of what was probably a larger treatise. It remains the oldest known surgical document in the world and a foundational text in the history of medicine, cited for its early description of the brain's role in the body and for what is thought to be the first recorded use of the word brain in any language.
