The Gudea Cylinders

The longest surviving Sumerian literary composition argues that a ruler's greatest legacy is not conquest but painstaking, divinely commissioned temple-building, staging Gudea's construction of Ningirsu's Eninnu temple at Girsu as an epic in its own right, complete with imported cedar, diorite, and lapis lazuli from as far as Meluhha.
