A third, more restrained reading of the Spring and Autumn Annals argues that its coded praise and blame should be recovered through grammar and precedent alone, without the Gongyang tradition's taste for dramatic exception. Its oral tradition traces to Qufu, but the actual Han-era site of redaction is unknown.
