Kikkuli Text

Chariot horses reach peak condition through a precisely numbered, months-long program of graduated exercise, controlled feeding, and rest intervals, not through unmeasured training or raw stock.
- earliest known systematic animal training manual
- interval-based conditioning schedule
- Indo-Aryan technical vocabulary embedded in a Hittite text
- practical science transmitted across three language communities
Written in Hittite by the Mitannian horse-trainer Kikkuli but preserving numerous Hurrian and Indo-Aryan technical terms, this is the oldest known detailed training manual for horses. It lays out a rigorous multi-month conditioning regimen for chariot horses, specifying daily distances, intervals of walking, trotting, and galloping, feeding schedules, and rest days, tracked with day-by-day precision. The presence of Indo-Aryan numeral and horsemanship terms embedded in a Hittite technical text is a key piece of evidence for the deep, if now obscure, transmission of specialist Indo-Aryan knowledge into the Hurrian-Mitannian world and from there into Hittite Anatolia.
