Quaestiones and Responsa, Papinian
Rome's most celebrated jurist, executed under Caracalla in AD 212 reportedly for refusing to justify the murder of his brother Geta, left legal writings so authoritative that they survive only as excerpts embedded throughout Justinian's Digest, the original treatises themselves being lost.
