A concise late-classical digest of private law attributed to the jurist Ulpian survives independently, in a single incomplete Vatican manuscript, while Ulpian's much larger commentaries on the praetor's edict and on Sabinus are otherwise lost and known only through excerpts in Justinian's Digest, the Codex, the Fragmenta Vaticana, and the Collatio; the surviving epitome's own linguistic evidence has led some scholars to date the version we have as late as the early 4th century.
